A view of the Fire
I up to the top of Barking steeple [All Hallows by the Tower], and there saw the saddest sight of desolation that I ever saw; every where great fires, oyle-cellars, and brimstone, and other things burning.
Samuel Pepys, 5 September 1666
All Hallows by the Tower, founded in AD 675, had had its tower rebuilt in 1658. Like St Olave's, the church was saved when the houses around it were blown up before the fire reached it. On 5 September Samuel Pepys climbed the tower to see the extent of destruction.
