Projects

The Heritage of London Trust is the only building preservation trust to cover all of Greater London. We work with all the London boroughs. We liaise with heritage bodies and conservation officers but also initiate projects where we identify the need.

Over the last 35 years we have given grants to over 600 restoration projects. Our grants often provide start-up funding, encouraging small organisations to raise additional funds themselves.

HOLT’s projects are sometimes very visible: but often, our projects are simply part of the streetscape you walk past every day. This map shows some of our past past and current current projects.

Some Past Projects

Gloucester Gate Bridge

Regarded as one of the finest bridges in London, Gloucester Gate Bridge was built in 1877 by William Booth Scott, Engineer for the Vestry of St Pancras. The bridge spans the Cumberland Basin, an extension of Regent’s Canal. The elaborate bronze candelabra were part of Scott’s original design, but had been damaged by a bomb during the war, and the basin filled with rubble. In 2008 the candelabra were restored by the Heritage of London Trust, the London Borough of Camden and English Heritage.

THE NATIONAL THEATRE

An internationally significant example of 20th century modernist architecture, the National Theatre was designed by Sir Denys Lasdun and built between 1969 and 1976. In 1998, one of Lasdun’s large windows was removed to make more space in the foyer. As part of a major upgrading of the theatre in 2014, the Lasdun window was reinstalled in a new café area across from its original location, within a new steel frame. The Heritage of London Trust supported this work.

St Leonard’s Church

St Leonard’s Church in Shoreditch was designed by the City surveyor George Dance the Elder in the 18th century. The church’s gilded wood clock, carved in rococo style, dates from this time. In 2004, its mechanism needed repair and cracks were visible in the casing. Also, on the western side of the church, decorative iron gates and railings were rusting and had lost some of their scrolls and finials. The Heritage of London Trust supported the restoration of the clock and the railings in 2004 and 2008.

Our Grant Scheme

The Heritage of London Trust runs a grant scheme for the restoration of historic buildings or monuments which are in community or public use of some kind. Buildings do not need to be listed but must be considered of historic or architectural interest.

All projects are assessed and visited by the Trust’s staff and if suitable, grant applications put forward to the Board which meets three times a year. Successful projects receive a committed grant for a period of three years. Funds are dispensed at the completion of the project. We stay involved in the progress of the project and require updates at intervals.

Grant Guidelines

Our grants are available for the restoration of specific architectural features on historic or listed buildings and monuments which are in community or public use of some kind. These might include clocks, decorative stonework, monuments, statues, reredos, or similar historic features that are integral to a building.

Please note that we are unable to give grants to the following:

  • Buildings in private ownership that are not open or available for public use and enjoyment
  • Roof replacements or repairs
  • Restoration schemes where the work has already been completed
  • General maintenance or repairs

Applicants who would like to apply for help from the Trust should initially telephone the Trust to discuss their scheme or send an e-mail with a jpeg photo to info@heritageoflondon.org.

You can also use the project enquiry form linked below.

If the work proposed is suitable for consideration we will then ask applicants to complete a detailed online application. We will need to know the following:

  1. Contact details for the project
  2. The cost of the project including estimates for the project and costs of restoration of any specific architectural details on the building
  3. Photographs (jpegs) of the project and a short history of the building
  4. A map link, the name of the Borough in which the building is located and whether it is locally or nationally listed
  5. If appropriate, the annual Report and Accounts of the organisation applying for a grant
  6. We would also like to know if the project is the subject of a Heritage Lottery Fund bid, whether grants have been offered by Historic England or the local Borough, and how fundraising is progressing for the scheme proposed

A member of the HOLT staff will then visit the project to discuss the work proposed and if the project is suitable, it will be considered by our Board of Management in January, June or October. Once a grant is offered it remains available for a period of three years.
